Research opportunity for women who do not have children

Volunteers Needed

Women, Age 65 to 80

who do not have children

and are willing to share their

experiences and views on later life

We are currently seeking volunteers to participate in a research project about lifestyles of childless older women. Many people wrongly assume that most women have children. However, we know that as many as 20% of adult women do not, either by choice or by circumstances.

We are interested in talking with women age 65 to 80 who have never had children or who have lost an only child to learn more about what they see as some of the joys and challenges of later life. Participation would involve three interviews in a place of the volunteer’s choosing, such as at her home, a restaurant, a senior center, a library – whatever is most convenient for the volunteer. All information will be kept confidential. This project is being sponsored by the National Institute of Aging. Participants will be eligible to receive an honorarium for completing the interviews.

Sales Tax Holiday Set for Memorial Day Weekend!

Energy Star Sales Tax Holiday Set for Memorial Day Weekend

This article was provided by the State Energy Conservation Office. For more information, visit www.seco.cpa.state.tx.us/.

During Memorial Day weekend, Texas shoppers get a break from state and local sales and use taxes on purchases of certain energy efficient products.

The 2009 Energy Star sales tax holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, May 23, and ends at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, May 25.

The products qualifying for the exemption are:

air conditioners priced under $6,000 (room and central units)

clothes washers (but not clothes dryers - because most dryers use similar amounts of energy, Energy Star does not label clothes dryers)

ceiling fans

dehumidifiers

dishwashers

light bulbs (incandescent and fluorescent)

programmable thermostats

refrigerators priced under $2,000

Qualifying products will display the Energy Star logo, which may appear on the appliance, the packaging or the Energy Guide label. Energy Star is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. Earning the Energy Star means a product meets strict energy efficiency guidelines set by these two federal agencies.

There is no limit on the number of qualifying items one can purchase during this sales tax holiday, and an exemption certificate is not required.

For more information on the sales tax holiday, including policies regarding layaways and delivery and installation charges, visit www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/taxpubs/tx96_1331/
